ABSTRACT:
Climate change, resource scarcity, and land degradation pose major challenges to modern agriculture. Excessive dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides adversely affects soil health and crop productivity, while the use of heavy metal-contaminated irrigation water further threatens agricultural sustainability. Beneficial plant-associated microorganisms offer a promising approach to improve soil fertility, enhance crop productivity, and increase plant tolerance to environmental stresses. Advances in synthetic biology have enabled the design of synthetic microbial communities (SyMCon) with controlled genetic functions for applications in agriculture, bioremediation, medicine, pharmaceuticals, and industry. Despite their considerable potential, the environmental release and application of SyMCon may involve risks, including horizontal gene transfer, ecological disturbances, and unintended effects. Therefore, appropriate biocontainment strategies and careful assessment of ecological, environmental, and ethical risks are essential for their safe and sustainable application.
