ABSTRACT:
Anxiety illness is one of the most prevalent mental health conditions. In the past ten years it currently affects one eight of the world’s population and has become a prominent area of study in psychopharmacology. Rubia cordifolia, which commonly known as Indian madder it is also known as manjistha one of the most common medicinal plants that belong to the Rubaceae family is manly found in Asia, Greece, and Africa and is prized for its high concentration of bioactive compounds. Rubia cordifolia, an ayurvedic herb is a perennial climber with very long cylindric flexible root and thin red bark long and grouped in four whorls, oval sharp bottom leaves. This study used aqueous leaf extract to assess its anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties. In this research article, the rats were given dosages of 100 and 200mg/kg Rubia cordifolia aqueous leaf extract for 28 days, and mCPP was used to create anxiety. It was found that the rats significantly spent more time in open and bright areas during behavioral tests (elevated plus maze and light-dark box), which suggested a decrease in anxiety. Flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and phenolic substances were detected via phytochemical examination. The strongest anxiolytic effect was observed at a dosage of 200mg/kg.
