ABSTRACT:
The present study was carried out to compare the lipid peroxidation activity and related hypolipidaemic activity in Arjunarishta-T and Arjunarishta -M prepared by traditional and modern methods with standard Atorvastatin. Hypolipidaemic activity was evaluated on cholesterol fed rats. The antioxidant activity of Arjunarishta-T and Arjunarishta-M was increased in a concentration dependent manner. Arjunarishta-T and Arjunarishta-M inhibited the ferrous sulphate induced lipid peroxidation in a dose dependent manner and showed Inhibitory Concentration (IC50) value 195.60 and 197.77 µg/ml, respectively. In hypolipidemic activity Arjunarishta-T and Arjunarishta-M at the dose of 2.0ml/kg body weight orally significantly reduced serum cholesterol (45% and 43%), serum LDL (61% and 58%) and serum triglycerides (35% and 34%). The increase in HDL was 17% when compared to control with both the Arjunarishta T and M and reduction in atherogenic index was found 1.393 and 1.494 in Arjunarishta-T and Arjunarishta-M treated groups respectively, which strongly supports anti-atherosclerotic property of Arjunarishta.
